About Me

I am a late 20's guy who enjoys running and being physically active.

Perhaps that is due to the influence of my father.  Growing up my Dad had done a few triathlons.  I barely remember anything about the triathlons, but remember that being in shape was important to him.  My brothers and I did a race with him that I think was a 5k.  That was the first race that I remember running.  I did a couple more races after that a 5 miler, and then a half-marathon, with a friend, that I came in under two hours.  A few years later during my junior/senior year of high school I got into cycling.  I did one race.  It was a 15-17 miler, mainly up hill.  I was only riding three or four times a week at the time and ended up taking 17th.  After the first ten minutes of riding I was not passed by anyone, but continually passed people on the course until the flats, and yes I was chicked.

The greatest experience that I have had on a bike, was a bike trip with my Dad from Lewiston, Idaho to Missoula, Montana.  It was around 300 miles and we did it in just three days.  Grandpa came along and drove the support vehicle/camper so we did not have to carry any of our gear.  Neither Dad or I were in amazing shape so we rode long hours, played lots of scrabble, and slept extremely well in the camper.  Good times.

Why did I decide to get into Ultra Running instead of biking, triathlons, or weight lifting?  Good question.  There are a few reasons for running.  First, there is thing that I would like to call naked shape.  Need I say more?  Second, running does wonders on my stress levels.  Whether a long or a short run the time spent outside pounding the pavement gives me time to think about what is going on and how to handle different situations.  Third, I enjoy running.  Fourth, ever hear of the Iron Triangle?  Basic theory on the subject says that all projects are bound by time, scope, and cost.  Cost prevents most people from doing certain things, and prevents me from going to the gym or buying needed equipment for the bike.

How will I do it?  Through basing my training on three pillars: hard work, consistent training, and support.  Working hard is something that has been a part of my life since I was knee high to a pickle bucket. I figure the enjoyment I get out of running combined with that attribute along will transfer to Ultra Running.  Getting out and running everyday is really based on whether or not I just do it.  Let me tell you some days I don’t run, but most I do.  I just put on my shorts, shoes, and walk out the door (after checking with the Spouse).  Family support is the biggest contributing factor to my success or potential success to Ultra Running.  I always ask if it is okay.  Always.  If it is not okay, then I do not go, period.

On these three pillars will I build myself into an Ultra Runner.
